2007 Results

Chris Turner & Simon Maguire were 2nd overall at the Albacore Internationals held in Maryland , USA on 8 – 12 October (Jerry & Pauline Rook were 19th out of 46 despite not sailing the last 3 races – too windy) We had a great time with temperatures in the 90s F inland and wall to wall sunshine, free beer and breakfast & evening meals – however the race committee were not up to the standard we have become used to at Lyme.

Chris Turner and Simon Maguire were 3rd overall at the Albacore UK National Championships, and Jerry Rook and James Wallace were 4th . The event was won by Barney Harris ( Mr USA Albacore) There were 33 entries. Chris & Simon won the windiest race.

MAJOR EVENT 2005

Lyme hosted the Albacore International Regatta and the UK National Championship from the 3rd to 9th September 2005.

Sunny skies and light breezes made easy sailing for the seventy five entrants at the Albacore International Regatta incorporating the UK National Championship at Lyme Regis although the competition was as hard as ever. Two helms, Mike McNamara and Chris Turner fought a close contest with Lyme-based Chris Turner and his crew Simon Maguire winning the International Regatta while Mike McNamara with Robin Barker claimed the UK National Championship. ......

Laser Team Racing Report (2005)

Report Dan Alsop

An inter-club team racing event was hosted by LRSC on Saturday 24th September 2005.

A light southeast breeze and sunshine provided ideal conditions and Colin Walters and Rachel Chesmer made a first class job of running all 20 races without a hitch.  Although Sutton Bingham was unable to field a team Beer sent two and Sidmouth one to challenge Lyme's own two teams.

Beer's No 1 team ran away with the event but their second team (who refused to accept this designation, styling themselves "Beer A") and Lyme's first team were only separated by a tie break, regrettably in Beer's favour.  Lyme's second team finished well ahead of Sidmouth.

Despite a general lack of team racing experience, event organiser Dan Alsop explained the special rules at the briefing and the only serious exchange of bad language occurred when the two Beer teams sailed each other. All concerned agreed this ought to become an annual event and Ron "Mr Laser" Westcott undertook to see if Sidmouth will run it next year.

Rooster Boat Whisperer Talk (2004)

Steve Cockerill is the current Laser Radial National Champion, Blaze and RS300 National Champion and the Laser Standard Master's National Champion in 2003.

35 Club members youth and visitors from Wimbalball, Sutton Bingham, Starcross & Beer Sailing Club attended the evening. Steve used video clips to explain the art of sailing an ISO, Europa, and Laser in all angles of sailing  including the 4th dimension of downwind sailing.  It was gone 11pm before we let Steve go. So in trying to use his advice you will see a lot more falling in at the start of the year as we learn how to get our Lasers down wind in the 4th dimension.

Background to Laser Sailing at Lyme Regis 1972 - Present
Lasers have been sailed at Lyme Regis since 1972 when the local boat chandler bought one and Paul Withers sailed to win the British National Championships in 1972. There followed a fleet of 30 lasers over the next few years and the club hosted many Qualifier, Area, and National Championships. The last in 2001 when we had 128 entries at the Masters National Championships.
