On Saturday 24th March, Fraser, Katie, Cameron, Max and Simon travelled to Farmoor, Oxford, to compete in this year’s Secondary School Team Racing Championship and after only 4 training sessions in the club’s Laser 2000s, were put against well-established, well practiced competitors. Despite the minor lack of practice, everyone’s first step into a Firefly, and a certain lack of all wind, waves and the tide, the team ended the day gaining 3 wins and 3 losses, with all wins being the 1st and 2nd over the line.
It was a huge learning curve and with racing being cut short at 72 out of a possible 150 races due to the wind, the team picked up the different style of racing very quickly and were congratulated to do so well overall considering. Everyone enjoyed the day thoroughly and picked up a lot of new skills in tactics and perfecting roll tacking and are looking forward to the introduction of regular team racing practice on Saturday afternoons with the rest of the Youth Section.
A huge thank you to Jerry for all of your organising and perseverance and Jo and Dave Law for waking up at 5am with us to make the trek and be our parents for the day!
