The conditions on Saturday 1st July turned more attractive when the sea breeze , filling in a little later than hoped, settled the extreme changes of wind direction which predominated throughout the first race.
A course for Optimists was run alongside the club race, both following a gusty, breezy morning of training for the youth race group. Race officer Jerry Rook was assisted by youth RS800 helm, Cameron Moss. Consistent performances by Allan and Chrissey Tyler, tuning up in their Fireball in preparation for the August championships, saw them win race 1 with a 5 minute margin, but they were narrowly beaten by an excellent performance from Max Smith, with an 11 second margin, in race 2.
Taking part in their Mirror dinghy for the first time, Andy Leslie with his young daughter Charlotte, completed both races. A BBQ for the young competitors was timed for their return to shore, and Simon Heusen and his team cooked a gourmet supper later in the evening.
An early northerly fresh breeze on Sunday gave way to a brisk SW before racing started, justifying the delay until lunchtime in expectation. Simon was again on duty, this time as race officer, and made the most of the ideal sailing waters by setting two courses suiting different classes.
Jerry Rook, crewed by Max Smith, won both races to take the Cup, one of the oldest in the club’s trophy collection dating from 1926, closely followed by Neil Moore in his Laser and Andy Robinson’s Solo.
The Cruiser Up Anchors race involved a Le Mans start from the beach and manoeuvres including a man overboard rescue, emphasising seamanship skills. 13 seconds separating them in an hour’s race, Mike Moore and Andrew Willoughby finished just ahead of Keith and Kaye Thompson, followed by Rob and Sharyn Walker.
“It was an ideal day’s racing, with more later start times being planned to take advantage of the sea breezes expected at this time of the year and racing continuing into the afternoons.” said Sailing Secretary Simon Heusen.
The club’s annual Regatta on 6/7th August will welcome visiting dinghies and events are held in support of Regatta and Carnival during their week.
