Sailed on Bank Holiday Monday, the Youth Regatta suffered from heavy showers, periodic deduced visibility and very light, variable winds, but still made the most of the marginal sailing conditions. The enthusiasm of the young competitors, in 21 dinghies, enabled all to complete one of the planned series of three over a small course despite wind shifts of 40/60 and even 90 degrees. The start was delayed for an hour while attempts were made to lay the course, the fleet being released from shore to get to the line in good time. With no prospect of wind filling in, Race officer Jerry Rook assisted by Pauline and Dave Beer, sent the sailors ashore helped by the Ribs, ready for an excellent BBQ prepared by Paul Bryant and his team. The feast was also enjoyed by parents, volunteer teams who had made the racing possible, and club members who joined them.
There were three classes, Gold handicap for the experienced young sailors who regularly compete, Silver handicap for those with less racing experience, and one for the Optimist cadets.
The winners received vouchers from CoastWaterSports. Commodore Jerry Rook thanked all the competitors and the teams on the water and on shore.
