Mary Rook won the 3-day UK Women's Matchracing Championships at the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy. She had a great crew of top women sailors and needed them as it was blowing a steady 25 knots plus for the final best of 3 races. Surprisingly, the organisers kept with spinnakers on the J80 sportsboats - who would want to be insuring them?
WELL DONE MARY!

August

Ain't no Sunshine Any More, in the words of the old classic, described the weather at the weekend, but luckily for Lyme Regis Sailing Club the Lyme Regis regatta took place in an ideal racing wind.

The Regatta followed the established format of a series of three races, two on Saturday and one on Sunday morning in which various sailing classes are given their own results, followed by the mass start for the Championship of the Day on Sunday afternoon, when everybody competes. Boats travelled from as far away as Ullswater, Hythe and Rutland water, making up a total of 44 entrants, roughly half of whom were visiting boats.

The races were run by club Vice Commodore Ian Wallace and his team in complex and varying conditions. Chips Howarth convincingly slaughtered the opposition to win the Fireballs. This was not a huge surprise as he is a former world champion in the class. Local sailor Dan Alsop, a national level coach and sailor of international standing won the fast handicap class with crew Alice Allen in his Merlin Rocket. Lyme sailors were very impressed with the speed shown by the visiting V3000 boats in this class, which are built by LRSC sailor Geoff Vanderbought.

Hugh Duncan, laser sailor and local plumber of repute, finished just below the prizes, taking fourth place in the Medium Handicap class, while Joss Kent and Nick Butler of LRSC took a very creditable third place in their Albacore. The class was won by father and son team Ian and Ben Fryett in an RS Feva. Triple Wiscombe commodore race team Rumcase were trounced in their Medina cruiser, finishing outside the prizes. John and Rob are both past commodores of the club, while Margaret is the current commodore. Such exalted positions to be cast so low! To rub salt into the wound, the cruiser class was convincingly won by their arch-rival from the Axe Yacht Club, David Mettam, sailing his Parker 21 with Ron Westcott and Lyn Weare.

Prizes were presented by Ian Wallace, assisted by Mayor Sally Holman.

Lyme Regis Sailing Club made a generous donation to the Regatta & Carnival committee collected from the event entrance fees. All in all it was a superb event, but why stop there? Plans are afoot to include more of Lyme's fellow water based clubs in next year's regatta.

Albacore Championships 2008 Looe SC

Five boats from Lyme helped make up the 40 entries at Looe in Cornwall for this year's Championships:- Joss Kent and Nick Butler, James & Robbie Blackburn, Tim & Alice Rook, Allan Tyler & Jeremy Wallace, and Mary & Jerry Rook.

With overall results of 4th (Mary), 7th (Allan & Jeremy) and 13th (Tim & Alice) Lyme won the Team prize. Mary won the Lady helms prize and also by winning the 6th race won a cup won by her Grandfather exactly 40 years before. Allan & Jeremy won the prize for best performance at their first Alb champs.

The event was blessed with three days of good (Force 2 – 4) breezes and was run by the host club in an exceptionally friendly way.

At the start of the third day event Mike McNamara looked as if he would walk away with it, with a show of impressive sailing, however by the end it came to a tie break with “Mr USA Albacore” Barney Harris.

Mary and I were sailing the new unsailed Ovington-built Epoxy boat which looked well built and tough, and after a few teething troubles (including crew tuning – as I managed to fall out of the boat) we showed good speed getting 3rd , 1st and 2 nd in the last 3 races, and beating Mike Mac in both the last two.

The next local event for the class will be the Poole Open on the weekend of 23 -24 August.

Plans are well underway for next year's UK & Internationals to be held at Largs in Scotland. We hope to have a “Burns Night” complete with whisky tasting and Haggis as one of the socials.
